The Burrow_

West Yorkshire

The Burrow breaks new ground. Set in Mount, Huddersfield, the site had long been constrained by its Green Belt designation. Unlocking it called for planning insight and architecture in equal measure — understanding what the land could become, then shaping a home that could belong there. One site. One integrated approach. A completely new opportunity.

Eight OneTwo’s in-house planning consultant identified the site’s grey belt potential from the outset. Grey belt is land within the Green Belt that makes a limited contribution to key Green Belt purposes, creating new potential for development where the required planning tests can be met. That distinction changed the direction of the site. Planning strategy and design evolved together, culminating in The Burrow becoming the first grey belt application approved in Kirklees.

The architecture is deliberately restrained. Low volumes sit into the land rather than above it, breaking down the mass and keeping the landscape dominant. Solid elevations create privacy and enclosure, opening selectively towards longer views. Expanses of glass pull daylight deep into the plan, while changes in level allow the house to follow the contours of the site. Low. Layered. Embedded.

The result is a house drawn into the Huddersfield landscape. Strong horizontal lines emphasise its low profile, with solid material planes giving weight against large areas of glass. Deep overhangs create shadow and shelter, while glazed openings stretch towards the surrounding countryside. Architecture and landscape begin to overlap. The Burrow is both a contemporary home in Mount and a marker for something bigger — the first grey belt approval in Kirklees, identified, planned and designed by Eight OneTwo.
