The Fitness Suite_

West Yorkshire

The Fitness Suite places a new pavilion within Thongsbridge Tennis Club, near Holmfirth. Eight OneTwo was brought in at the front end to explore the potential for a dedicated fitness building and establish a clear architectural direction for the site. Low, linear and set against the woodland edge, the concept adds a new layer to the club without competing with what surrounds it.

Tennis courts stretch along one side. Woodland closes around the other. Between them, the building stays deliberately low, allowing the landscape to remain dominant while creating a strong new edge to the courts. Long views replace enclosed gym walls. Training sits alongside tennis. Inside and outside remain constantly connected.

A strong concrete frame sets the rhythm, extending horizontally across the site and framing the spaces within. Full-height glazing opens the fitness suite towards the courts, while more solid elements provide enclosure where it is needed. Vertical timber battens sit against the harder concrete, filtering light and creating changing patterns of shadow across the elevations. Structure, screen and glass. Nothing unnecessary.

The result is calm, robust and closely tied to its setting. Fair-faced concrete gives the pavilion weight; timber brings warmth and rhythm; expansive glazing reflects the woodland and opens the interior towards the tennis courts. Deep overhangs create shade and sharpen the long horizontal profile. From inside, sport and landscape become the backdrop to the fitness spaces. From the courts, the pavilion forms a crisp new edge, with the woodland rising behind it.
