The Link_

West Yorkshire

The Link began with two buildings and the space between them. Separate, disconnected and limiting the way the house could be used, the opportunity was to make them work as one. A fourth ground-floor bedroom was needed, more living space around the kitchen was desirable, and circulation between the two structures needed resolving. One intervention had to do it all. A link in both name and purpose.

The challenge was making a relatively small addition work exceptionally hard. Two existing structures brought fixed levels, openings and thresholds, leaving a narrow set of parameters in which to work. For extensions in Huddersfield, changes to footprint and external appearance can also determine whether planning permission is required or works fall within permitted development rights. Here, every part of the new volume needed to earn its place — connecting, extending and reorganising without becoming an unnecessary addition in its own right.

A Corten steel volume bridges the gap. Warm, tactile and deliberately distinct, it creates a new corridor between the buildings while unlocking space for a fourth ground-floor bedroom and expanding the living space around the kitchen. Above, the roof breaks free from the footprint. Splaying out beyond the building line, it becomes a generous canopy over the entrance — turning a practical connection into a moment of arrival. One move. Multiple functions.

The result is compact, precise and transformative. Weathered Corten gives The Link its identity, bringing depth and texture between the existing buildings. Inside, circulation becomes effortless. The kitchen gains space. A fourth bedroom brings flexibility. Outside, the splayed canopy creates shelter and gives the entrance a new presence. Nothing is superfluous. A corridor becomes an extension. An extension becomes an entrance. Two buildings become one.
