The Ridge_

South Yorkshire

The Ridge creates new homes on a shifting edge in Millhouse Green, Sheffield. Part residential setting, part Green Belt, the site opens towards the wider South Yorkshire landscape. The ambition was to introduce new architecture with presence, space and character, while keeping the development closely tied to the scale and landscape around it. New homes shaped by their position at the edge.

The site demanded restraint. Building new homes where part of the land falls within the Green Belt made height, mass and position central to the design. Existing properties define one edge; open countryside defines the other. Between them, the architecture needed to find its place. The changing ground offered another opportunity, allowing space to be found through level and section rather than simply spreading across the site.

Pitched volumes rise and fall across the development, breaking the new homes into a sequence of smaller forms. Rooflines shift with the topography, creating a varied silhouette against the landscape. More solid elevations protect privacy towards neighbouring properties, while expansive glazing turns towards the longer Green Belt views. Internally, spaces follow the same rhythm — intimate where enclosure matters, opening into larger volumes where light and landscape take over.

The result is strong in silhouette and grounded in material. Stone gives the lower volumes weight, while darker cladding sharpens the forms above. Deep reveals create shadow across the elevations and large panes of glass cut through the solidity, pulling the surrounding countryside into the interiors. Terraces step with the land, extending living spaces towards the open landscape. Stone grounds them. Glass opens them. The ridge does the rest.
