The Yard_
The Yard stacks a new social landscape into Leeds. Dining, drinking, relaxing, meeting and events come together in a pop-up village built around movement and choice. Eight OneTwo shaped the project as front-end concept architects, turning a loose collection of uses into one strong idea. Containers become rooms. Gaps become streets. Roofs become terraces.
The site called for density without permanence. Multiple uses needed to sit together without feeling prescribed, shifting easily between daytime and evening, quiet corners and larger gatherings. Rather than one building, The Yard becomes a collection of spaces — compressed, open, sheltered, elevated. A small piece of city within the city.
Shipping containers stack, shift and cantilever across the site, creating a deliberately irregular silhouette. Lightweight steel decks stitch the different levels together, while stairs cut through the composition and turn circulation into part of the architecture. Terraces occupy the spaces between. Openings frame views across Leeds. Green roofs and living walls spill over the harder industrial structure. Movement happens vertically as much as horizontally.
The result is raw, layered and full of energy. Corrugated steel gives the containers their industrial rhythm; exposed structure keeps the architecture light and temporary. Timber decks bring warmth underfoot, while planting softens edges, drops between levels and wraps around places to sit. Containers hold the activity. Terraces create the pause. Steel connects it all. The Yard is less a building than a piece of urban landscape — stacked, planted and constantly changing.
